How To Survive Daily Tasks And Parenting When You’re Sick
Well, it’s that time of year again. The dreaded summer cold has hit my house. My middle daughter brought it home from school and it spread like wildfire through our house. Of course my husband is away at training so I’m on my own.
My kids got over their colds so quickly but mine is holding on. I did have a day where I thought I was getting better but woke up the next morning feeling terrible.
Having three kids and three dogs to take care of alone when I’m sick can make life complicated. So far this week we’ve had a dentist appointment and an orchestra concert to attend along with all the other usual things.
Here’s what I’ve learned in my years of single parenting while my husband is away at training or deployed.
Pick your battles. Seriously, this is super important. I’m normally they type of person that has to get everything done, everyday. Not when I’m sick though. My house may be covered with toys right now but the kids are happy. I can’t fight every single battle, that would be too exhausting.
Do two chores at a time. I am so tired right now and my head is so congested. I only do two things then I sit down and take a break. I just finished switching the laundry and emptying the trash cans, now I’m taking a break and typing before I have to cook dinner.
Starbucks is your friend. I normally only get Starbucks once a month but this week it’s been almost daily. The caffeine in the afternoon gives me just enough energy to make it through dinner, baths and bedtime.
Choose easy dinners. We have eaten drive though food a few times already so tonight I’m choosing something simple to make at home, tacos…. Some other super easy meals to consider would be cans of soup or breakfast for dinner.
I’ve been doing a quick clean-up after the kids go to bed, just so I don’t wake up to a ton of messes.
Airborne tablets are a must. I’ve been drinking them for a few days now and they seem to be helping. They also taste good.
I’m starting to feel better after five days of being sick and luckily for me my hubby is on his way home from training. I tend to steer clear of cold medicine. I have however been taking Mucinex to keep my lungs clear. Other than that I’ve been drinking tons of water and napping everyday.
That’s how I have survived this terrible cold while parenting alone.
